Pacific Rim’s long-awaited sequel just got universally cool. Deadline.com reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega will star in Pacific Rim 2, the follow-up to the 2013 original cult sci-fi action movie pits giant Godzilla-esque beasts intent on destroying the world against massive human-powered robots called Jaegers. Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi are expected to reprise their roles. In a nod to Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost who died in the original, Boeyga will play Stacker’s son. It is assumed that the character will have some part in saving the world from the monstrous Kaijus return.
This casting not only capitalizes on Boyega’s Star Wars fame, it maintains the diversity of the original, which is important to Pacific Rim's writer-director Guillermo del Toro's. He tells Deadline.com, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.” Pacific Rim 2 will start production in later this year.
