'Independence Day: Resurgence' Trailer is Missing A Bright Star

On Sunday, the trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence” invaded the internet, and didn't necessarily break it.  Resurgence is theWill Smith-less follow-up to the 1996 alien invasion movie with now iconic White-House demolishing special effects.  Honestly, the trailer is genuinely intriguing with a methodical and dramatic imagery overlayed with a heavy, dragging beat—eerie aliens skulls, airport hangers, astronauts in peril, former President Whitmore now a haunted, white-bearded old man. It manages to convert most of my skepticism to curiosity.  But it’s not epic enough to cover the glaring absence of Will Smith (his character, Col. Steven Hiller, died in on a test flight after a technical malfunction in 2007, EW.com reports).

In the two decades since the first alien invasion, the world used purloined alien technology to build an “immense defense program to protect the planet,” according to the movie's official description.  However, a second invasion finds them to be an “unprecedented force.”

New characters will join stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox in order to save the world, including Jesse Usher as Will Smith’s Steven Hiller’s grown son, and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’s” Liam Hemsworth.  Hemsworth may be nice on the eyes, but there is no universe where he can match Smith’s charisma and presence.

What do you think of the trailer?  Watch below and hit up the comments section.
