If you heard something go bump on Friday night, it wasn't a monster, it was the sound of a collective fandom banging their heads against their desks after watching Sleepy Hollow's season ender. Sleepy Hollow, Fox’s troubled sci-fi show, ended its third season with the profoundly stupid death of its central character Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie.
If only it had sustained their groundbreaking and whimsical storytelling in season 1.

To borrow from a popular Titanic Tumblr meme, it’s been 84 years since we’ve gotten a new episode of Empire.
The powerful Fox hip hop tragedy is finally returning for the back half of its second season. We finally get to learn what happened to Andre and Rhonda’s baby after she was cruelly shoved down the stairs by a masked attacker (expect grim news); and how Lucious is handling the loss of his cherished company (expect crazy). In order to celebrate the epic return of Empire, we must appreciate the most important thing about the show. It’s not the Emmy-nominated actor, Taraji P. Henson and or Oscar nominee Terrence Howard. It’s not the scene-stealers, Jussie Smollett and Ta’Rhonda Jones. It's not even the music. It’s Cookie Lyon’s sublime fashion. The only thing more exciting than what will come out of the mama Lyon’s mouth is what comes out of her closet. From furs to fringe to feathers, nothing is off-limits for the matriarch of this empire. Check out my favorite season 2 ensembles, check out the preview below, and don’t forget to tune into Empire on Wednesdays on Fox at 9/8c. The most delightful thing to spring from season 2 of The CW's Jane The Virgin, besides all of the adorable babies and Jane finally picking Michael as her one true love, is the unusual friendship, or womance, budding between our favorite virgin, Jane, and her baby's father's steely ex-wife, Petra.
The arrival of spring means warmer weather, brunch outdoors and a field-fresh harvest of guilty pleasure television. Bravo is kicking off their summer season with their fan-favorite reality show, Shahs of Sunset. The squad is back, and a new preview finds Reza, MJ, Gigi, Asa and new guy Shervin gearing up for another summer of partying, jet-setting, fighting.
The 88th Annual Academy Awards are this Sunday, and you’re either in the midst of planning your Oscar party, indifferent to the awards show obsession or boycotting because of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. I'm leaning towards avoiding the awards ceremony, save for host Chris Rock's opening monologue, so I've planned a full roster of television to mainline along with a gooey plate of nachos.
Here are 5 shows to binge-watch on Oscar night... The 47th NAACP Image Awards, which aired Friday night on TVOne, answered the Oscars exclusion with an awards show that was an inclusive celebration for musicians, actors and activists of color. Winners and nominees cheered each other on, cracked jokes while presenting and accepting their awards, and passionately and adorably lip-synched to John Legend’s performance.
With the movie industry abuzz about the lack of inclusiveness in movies and, by extension, award shows, people have been citing television as a small screened standard for diversity. Admittedly television has always been far more progressive than cinema--now with hundreds of shows between broadcast, cable, premium channels and streaming services--it has to be. But truthfully even television's not that much better.
Supernatural has always been pretty light in terms of race and quality female and LGBTQIA characters. Having stupidly killed off one of the only female and the only gay recurring character in series history, there has been a gaping hole in both departments since the demie of Charlie Bradbury. As a longtime fan and a black woman, it’s been a constant point of frustration with the show. It’s not about checking boxes or filling quotas, but when a show regularly references saving the world, all of factions of it should be represented. After last week’s devilishly disappointing episode, I had no expectations for “Into The Mystic," a monster-of-the-week case about people who die after hearing a primal scream. Fortunately, thoroughly enjoyed this episode! Grab your favorite vinyl, and let’s dive in, shall we?
From Cynthia’s martial issues and launch of her eyewear collection to the petty competition for occupancy certificates between Moore Manor and Chateau Sheree, the eighth, and Nene Leakes-lite, season of The Real Housewives Of Atlanta, has yet to disappoint.
New housewife actress/director/Scout Mommy Kim Fields has been an polarizing and frustrating for addition to the cast. Fans of the show and Fields’ career were taken aback by a Kim's surprisingly homebodied personality. She's a woman who successfully avoided the perils of Hollywood and child stardom when few black women did, but can't bear being away from her husband for more than 12 hours. How does she direct “hundreds of hours of television” and corral petulant, ego-driven actors, but is overwhelmed by the prospect of a day on a boat with accomplished women? Did she even know what she was signing up for? It’s true that you don’t realize how much you love something until it’s gone. With most of m’shows on winter hiatus, I find myself wondering what my favorite characters are doing, and watching old reruns just to hear their voices. It’s a one-sided love affair, but I knew that going in. So now is the perfect time to share my favorite TV characters in no particular order...
The 2016 Golden Globes unfortunately handed out more awkward and frustrating moments than trophies during its tediously broadcast on Sunday. Why is Mel Gibson or Quentin Tarantino even allowed at award shows? How come Melissa McCarthy, Andy Samberg or Kevin Hart couldn't tap in for the insanely snooze-worthy Ricky Gervais?
The silver lining of an overall sub-par awards show is that it made the few and far-between highlights feel nearly meteoric. Here were the best moments... |
