The 2016 Golden Globes unfortunately handed out more awkward and frustrating moments than trophies during its tediously broadcast on Sunday. Why is Mel Gibson or Quentin Tarantino even allowed at award shows? How come Melissa McCarthy, Andy Samberg or Kevin Hart couldn't tap in for the insanely snooze-worthy Ricky Gervais?
The silver lining of an overall sub-par awards show is that it made the few and far-between highlights feel nearly meteoric. Here were the best moments...
*“Empire’s” Taraji P. Henson, Winner for Best Actress in a TV Drama, channeled Oprah as she passed out cookies to guests and stars like Leonardo DiCaprio on her way to her stage. Her uproarious speech (which she might be able to parlay into a Moet endorsement) included her chastising producers for rushing her off the stage: “I waited 20 years for this. You gon' wait. You gonna give me a little more time."
*If you forgot what a legendary actor Denzel Washington is, then the blazing montage that aired before his fumbling acceptance speech Cecil B. Demille Award will remind you. I have a date with “The Pelican Brief” and "Man On Fire" this weekend.
*The least surprising win of the night -- Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor in a Drama -- offered the one of the most heartwarming speeches. With millions championing the actor’s decades-overdue Oscar win, the handsome actor cherished time at any podium, giving an impassioned speech about the “unfathomable” experience of making “The Revenant,” and the importance of honoring Native American history. He was also famously spooked that Lady Gaga's strut to the stage, and takes home the unofficial award for Most Gif-Able Moment Of The Night!
*While the media seems to think that Hollywood besties Jennifer Lawrence (Winner for Best Actress In A Comedy or Musical – “Joy”) and Amy Schumer are the best BFF duo since Ben and Matt, presenters America Ferrera and Eva Longoria got genuine laughs as they flawlessly threw shade at the Golden Globes themselves for mistaking actress “Superstore” star (and Emmy winner) America Ferrera for “Jane The Virgin” star and nominee Gina Rodriguez in a December tweet during their nomination ceremony.
*Award shows capitalize on gorgeous, impeccably groomed stars wearing stunning couture. However, the combination of the sinfully sculpted, velvet tuxedo-clad Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and fashion icon Jennifer Lopez delivered an overwhelming amount of slayage.
Dear Entertainment Gods, please let there be a movie starring The Rock and Jenny From The Block on deck for 2017! Love, Small Screen Girl Photo Credits: latimes.com; independent.co.uk, tumblr.com, gfnews.theclassifiedsplus.com
