The Super Bowl has always been testament to American competition, spectacle and one-upsmanship. And Super Bowl 50 brought plenty of all three.
Lady Gaga’s sparkly ensemble and operatic national anthem made for a unique and spangly start, however, the true competition was found on the field—and I’m not talking about the Denver Broncos beating the Carolina Panthers for the win. Beyonce and Bruno Mars absolutely slayed during their halftime performance of the newly released black empowerment anthem “Formation” and 2015’s instant dance hit, “Uptown Funk.” Oh yeah, Coldplay was there too.
The highlight was the swagger-soaked, twerk-happy dance-off between Queen B’s incredible all-female “Formation” squad (who channeled the Black Panthers in their all black costumes and berets) and Bruno Mars and the Hooligans.
Though this halftime show was the best in years, if not ever, the Pepsi Halftime Show also paid tribute to past shows in a montage of memorable performances played while Coldplay performed "Up&Up." Beyonce wore a black leather jacket with golden bullet sashes to honor Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance. This caps an insane Super Bowl weekend for Beyonce, who nearly broke the internet by releasing “Formation” on Saturday and announced the Formation World Tour, which kicks off in April, during Superbowl on Sunday. She also announced the creation for a fund to create a fund that will help "address the long-term developmental, education, nutrition and health needs of the children affected by the Flint water crisis," FreeP.com reports. More information is available here. Beyonce will also perform in at Detroit's Ford Field on May 29. Watch the Formation video and Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars' epic performance below!
