If you’re even the most lax consumer of entertainment, odds are you’ve seen Mahershala Ali's flawlessness on your big or small screen at least once. His gorgeousness, charisma, insane talents, and love of fashion is more than enough to make this now two-time SAG Award winner this week's #MCM. He’s been mine for more since his breakout role in USA's The 4400 (2004-2007).
2016 was The Year Of Mahershala. He starred in Marvel's Luke Cage, House Of Cards, and was in three movies, including Hidden Figures and Moonlight, the latter has secured this actor a gaggle of award nominations, including that Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar, for his supporting role as a do-gooding drug dealer.
Now, Ali gets to reap the long overdue rewards of his incredible work and talent. At last night’s 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, Ali' win for Moonlight pushed him one step closer to Oscar gold. More importantly, the soulful actor kicked off a night of extraordinary passionate political speeches in reaction with a beautifully, emotional one. “What I’ve learned from working on Moonlight, we see what happens when you persecute people. They fold into themselves,” he began. He continued, “There’s an opportunity to see the texture of that person, the characteristics that make them unique. Then there’s an opportunity to go to war about it. And to say ‘that person is different from me. I don’t like you. Let’s battle.’ My mother is an ordained minister. I’m a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago. I’ll tell you now…I’m able to see her; she’s able to see me. The love has grown.” Congrats, on your SAG Awards, your Oscar nomination, and being SSG’s Man Crush Monday! Watch below, and try not to fall in love with an actor who is about has just begun setting Hollywood on fire.
